In the far northern reaches of Itlay in the Alpine region of Alto Adige a wide variety of grapes are grow in the various influences of Italian, Austrian and French viticulture weighing in over the centuries. Kerner is a variety produced first in Germany as a cross of riesling and schiava (a variety native to Alto Adige). Named for the German poet Justinus Kerner, it is a aromatic white grape known to have good acid and fruity notes. Abbazia di Novacella's is excellent dry white example of this underappreciated variety.
